side probe #5
ON
THE OBSOLESCENCE
OF THE CITY
The
same process of speed-up, pushed further in recent years, has resulted
in a total reversal of the patterns of confusion generated by the first
travel revolution of rail and steam-boat.
The
car decentralized the city, creating the sub-urb, the plane made every
city the suburb of evrey other, and the jet bypasses urb and suburb alike,
leaving them to decay and befuddle "developers".
Meantime,
children standing in their playpens watching TV ads begin to experience
all aspects of the entire globe at once as an intimate portion of the
new human environment.
The
TV generation feels truly at home in any and all parts of the globe, except
under its own archaically-structured roof-tree.
